Editing
This is the foundational step where raw footage is assembled, organized, and shaped into a coherent story. It's the creative heart of post-production.
The Skills
Offline Editing
The initial rough assembly of footage, often using proxy (low-resolution) files for speed. The focus here is on storytelling, pacing, and performance.
Assembly & Rough Cuts
The first pass, putting scenes in order. Iterative rounds of feedback and revisions occur to refine the narrative flow.
Fine Cutting & Picture Lock
Polishing the edit, tightening transitions, perfecting timing. "Picture Lock" means the visual edit is finalized and no more changes will be made, allowing other departments (sound, VFX, color) to begin their work with a stable timeline.
